STATEMENT FROM THE MEMBERS OF METALLICA

Metallica regrets to announce that after 14 years as Metallica's bass player, Jason Newsted has chosen to leave the band.

Jason Newsted: "Due to private and personal reasons, and the physical damage that I have done to myself over the years while playing the music that I love, I must step away from the band. This is the most difficult decision of my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my brothers: James, Lars, and Kirk and the rest of the Metallica family, friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable."

Newsted joined Metallica from Flotsam And Jetsam in the fall of 1986 after the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton. He participated in the recording of 6 Metallica albums (…And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, Re-Load, Garage Inc., and S&M) which have sold over 55 million copies worldwide to date. In addition, he played on numerous worldwide tours to millions of fans representing over 1000 gigs in all. While with Metallica, the band won countless awards including 5 Grammy Awards and 2 MTV Video Music Awards.

James Hetfield: "Playing with someone who has such unbridled passion for music will forever be a huge inspiration. On stage every night, he was a driving force to us all, fans and band alike.

In the spring, Metallica will begin writing and recording a new studio album with release sometime in late 2001 or early 2002.

Metallica: THE NEW STUDIO RECORD. Hey, i copied this info for ya, it's what each band member had to say about the new studio album. It was obviously said when jason was still in the band. ------------------------------------------------------ Jason Newsted: It needs to be listenable, musical, thick, heavy... we need to take some chances, really make it sound like it was fucking fun when people listen back, make it live. The changes I would like to see are lessening of the rules and removal of many many rules as we know them now, plus way more open minds from everyone to do some crazy shit. Even if it won't end up on an album, just follow it to see where it will take us. That covers album was all about us in a room together rockin', like it used to be. I'd like to see things like James playing drums and me singing - maybe on the song he plays drums on. I dunno, just some different shit. James and I have already had words about all this and I feel really good. He said he wants me to come with real songs, that I have great ideas and a riff here and a riff there... dude, is that the green light? Yes it was. So that's all I needed. I mean it's been a long time since I had to think about putting a real riff tape together... five years. So part of what I mean when I talk about changing rules is that maybe I'll go to James' house and work on some shit before he gets to Lars' dungeon. We just really need to take some different approaches and channels, I mean, even if we stick with the same production team, we need that new approach. ------------------------------------------------------ Kirk Hammett: Finding different ways to channel that energy and aggression we have, taking a few different creative roads that we haven't taken. I don't think there will be any drum loops or sequencers, not that I can forsee at this point; we're not about to become the next Fatboy Slim. But manipulated sounds, guitar sounds and samples definitely have some room in our future. The faith that those guys have in me is stronger than it's ever been. Frankly, I'm just really excited. I know James has a lot of strong material, and I know that I have a lot of strong material. I'm actually looking forward to going back in the studio. The symphonic thing really opened up things for us. It was one of the greatest musical experiences I've ever had. . . I loved it. ------------------------------------------------------- Lars Ulrich: It's a little bit early to think about the next record in tearms of specifics, but words that come to my mind are "harsh", "ugly", "noisy" and "big, fat fucking guitar riffs". I personally want the next album to be really brutal and harsh and fucked up and ugly. Those are the words that come to mind when I think of the next record, especially "brutal" and "harsh". I wanna make a really harsh record, I think we've done enough of the blues-based English riffage, that we've been having so much fun with for the last three albums. For me, that's out of my system. The next Metallica record is one that I want to be brutal and fucked up. It's been so long since we've written songs, and I think there've been so many advances in tearms of sound possibilities and technology, that I really look forward to embracing it all and trying something new with regards to sounds and approach. It's not going to be experimenting with loops and sounding like Rob fucking Zombie. It's about fusing elements from the advances that are around us with the songs we come up with, the riffs we write and James' melodies. For me, there's a tenacity which insures that when Metallica puts out a record in 2001, we'll still be contenders, relevant and viable, at least in our own minds. I'm really looking forward to that. I'm anxious to do it. I don't think we need to leave the Bay Area to make that record. I think we need to not make the record at The Plant. And also, as Bob Rock was pointing out the other day, the way technology is going, we don't even need a recording studio. Maybe we could rent a house somewhere, a factory space, a warehouse, a garbage dump, whatever. ------------------------------------------------------- James Hetfield: We've got to do it more like we did Garage Inc. We go in and play the songs, practice the fuck out of 'em, know them better and feel better. We'll pick 'em to death but we don't wanna pick each other to death. We spend to much time on the details, and I think we can just rehearse the fuck out of it and go in and record them. As far as material, whoever comes up with the best material that's it. I'd love everyone to fucking come in with the best shit. Do you think rehearsing new material live before recording the next album via a mini-tour is something which could happen? There's a few ideas we're throwing around about the record and that is one we'd love to do, bringing it on the road. You add stuff you wouldn't in the studio, can we get everyone on a fucking bus and just do it? I'm sure we could. Can we play these gigs without someone bootlegging them on the internet? Probably not. But it's important not to be so comfortable. This place is preatty comfortable. We're talking about maybe getting a house together and bringing a desk in. That'd be fun. Could it happen? Dunno, there are variables with families and all that. But we've gotta try something fresh, we know that for sure.
